Police suspect residents of Old Fadama

“We suspect people from that area. These people were evacuated and were asked to relocate but they did not. Some of them came back and are hiding in the communities .

Evicted residents of the Old Fadama slum, popularly known as Sodom and Gomorrah are being suspected of carrying our the armed robbery attacks at Amanfrom in Accra.

Some residents of the Old Fadama threatened to terrorise parts of Accra when the Accra Metropolitan Assembly carried out a demolition exercise at the  site in Accra months ago to make way for the dredging of Odaw River and the Korle Lagoon.

However most of those residents who were displeased by the exercise subsequently staged a demonstration and also issued some threats. Sodom and Gomorrah, with an estimated population of 60,000, lies along the banks of the Odaw River and the Korle lagoon, and it is one of Africa’s biggest slums.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander DCOP Christian Yohunu says the Command has reasons to believe that a large number of the evicted residents of Sodom and Gomorrah have relocate to the Amanfrom area.

“We suspect people from that area. These people were evacuated and were asked to relocate but they did not. Some of them came back and are hiding in the communities . We know there are good ones among them but those with criminal intents have decided to join gangs to cause trouble. Some of them are even ex-convicts who had gone to settle in the area. Once, they have been evacuated, they decided to come back because they have no where to go.”

The Greater Accra Regional Commander added that the members of the general public were right to be anxious about the situation, but assured them that Police will bring the situation under control in a speedy manner.

"The police is ready to fight all criminals and whoever is caught will be dealt with irrespective of the area they are coming from.  I call on the public to assist the police with vital information that could lead to the arrest of any suspected individuals. "
