Woman sentenced to death for murder of 3-year-old boy

The woman was sentenced for poisoning a 3-year-old boy to death.

The woman, Talata Baana poisoned the three-year boy at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.

Baana pleaded not guilty to the crime but the seven-member jury returned a guilty verdict.

Marie-Louis Simmons, Chief State Attorney told the court that Baana committed the crime on December 22, 2014, following what she called an act of revenge against the boy’s mother whom she accused of destroying her marriage.

Baana abducted the boy on that day and took him from Kumasi to Nkawie at around midday.

She subsequently prepared rice for the boy and gave him an insecticide – dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) to drink.

Baana later walked a distance of about 150 meters into the bush with the boy and left him to his fate.

A farmer who was returning from his farm found the boy foaming at the mouth and lying unconscious in the bush.

The boy was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) but he later passed away.

The Suntreso police, however, managed to arrest Baana two days later and she confessed to the crime.

An autopsy report signed by Dr. Isaac Siaw Lartey, a pathologist at the referral facility, attributed the cause of death to poisoning.
