Ghana Drunkards Association to hit the streets over Adonko Bitters ban

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the registration and advertisement licence of Angel Group of Companies, manufacturers of Adonko Bitters, for allegedly selling alcohol to minors at a concert.

President of the Ghana Drunkards Association, Moses Onyaa, also known as Dry Bone said his members will hit the streets on Friday if the decision is not reversed.

“We gave FDA three weeks to lift the ban or we would demonstrate…this is the third week and the ultimatum we gave would expire on Friday, if after Friday they don’t lift the ban, all drunkards in Ghana would take to the streets and demonstrate against the FDA…,” he told Accra-based Adom FM.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the registration and advertisement licence of Angel Group of Companies, manufacturers of Adonko Bitters, for allegedly selling alcohol to minors at a concert organised by the company at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Easter Monday.

According to the FDA, most of the youth passed out at the event due to excessive intake of the alcoholic product.

The company has also been slapped with an administrative charge of GHS25,000 for failing to comply with the regulatory requirements.

But the drunkards have argued that the ban has resulted in a shortage of the alcoholic drink at bars.

The president of the Drunkards Association said his outfit has since issued a statement “ordering our members not to drink any brand of alcohol apart from Akpeteshie.”

He also wondered why the Alcohol Producers Association have failed to speak on the ban against its member.

“Adonko is a drink that our members nationwide likes a lot, some also sell as well, the ban is destroying their work too…,” he said.

“We are on a nationwide strike until next week. Now, we don’t get Adonko to drink, some members have been trooping to my office to demand that they bring Adonko back because they don’t get some to drink…,” he said.
