Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana today [Monday, October 3, 2016] protested at the headquarters of the power distributor in Accra to demand the immediate removal of the Managing Director of the company.

According to the workers, Robert Dwamena has gone past his retirement age and should be removed.

The protesters were clad in red and were wielding placards with the inscription: “No staff goes beyond 60 years.”

Workers of the Electricity Staff Union argue that the Managing Director celebrated his 60th birthday on September 28 and should have retired immediately, but the government has allegedly decided to extend his tenure.

Commenting on the matter, the Deputy Minister of Power, John Jinapor, however, expressed surprise with the action taken by the ECG workers.

He believed that the workers have failed to state specific concerns as to why they want the MD removed.

“There’s been no specific issue that they have raised except the concession and I do know that as a deputy minister the concession predates the appointment of Mr Dwamena. And so if they have concerns, I would wish that they use laid down procedure, we use the appropriate channels of communication to seek redress rather than embarking on an industrial action,” he told Accra-based Joy FM.

The workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana have earlier been on strike to press home demands for government to rescind its decision to give away operations of ECG to a private concessionaire for twenty years.
