In Western Region Woman abandons baby in forest

Police at Adum Banso in the Mpohor District of the Western Region have rescued a one and a half year old son who was abandoned by his mother in a forest.

Chief Inspector Edward Addo of the Adum Banso Police who confirmed the the tragic incident to journalists said "it was a farmer who bumped into the child in the forest on Saturday,  August, 3 2016".

"The farmer, George Minimsaa who works with the Benso Oil Palm Plantation told the police that the child was naked but saw a piece of cloth beside him under a palm tree in the forest. Horrified by the scene, he quickly rushed home to inform the community Elders who also informed the police".

Inspector Addo continued that "the farmer then led the police to the forest at K4, an adjoining village where the child was rescued after a short search".

He was taken to a local clinic at Adum Bamso where he is currently being cared for.

"Announcement was made for the community folks to come and identify him on Tuesday, August, 2, 2016. A girl who identified the child assisted the police to trace the mother at a nearby village called K9 on the same day, Tuesday, August 2. She was subsequently arrested and brought to the police station".

Mr Addo continued that "the mother,  Ekua Gyasiwa, 26, a native of Abura Dunkwa in the Abura Asebu Kwmankese District of the Central Region told the police the child is not handsome and that she is also not  interested in the marriage with the child's father prompting her action.

"Further interrogation of the mother revealed she abandoned the child on Tuesday, July, 26, 2016 implying the child spent more than four days in the forest eating sand for survival".

She has since been charged with exposing a child to harm and been remanded in police custody.
