DOVVSU is woefully ineffective - NGO

It is a unit under the Police Service mandated to handle and prosecute all issues regarding domestic violence, but its effectiveness has been questioned.

Formerly known as Women and Juvenile Unit (WAJU) set up in 1998 and reformed in 2004 into Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), the Police Service subsidiary has the mandate to:

i Investigate all female and children related offences;

ii. Handle cases involving domestic violence;

iii. Handle cases of child abuse;

iv. Handle juvenile offences;

v. Handle cases of child delinquency;

vi. Prosecute all such cases, where necessary, and [to perform] any other functions [as] directed by the Inspector General of Police.

However, Mrs. Myles Koufie said from experience, DOVVSU is rather empowering irresponsible men to take women for granted.

Speaking in an interview with Pulse.com.gh, she claimed it is a complete waste of time to resort to DOVVSU for resolution of any domestic violence related issue.

“A place like DOVVSU, I am even discouraged, you take a man there, you will be going there for more than three months and at the long run he will be freed. First month he will give you GHc 10, they will ask him how much he can give you, whether lies or not. So, the men are free to do whatever they like. The women will go up and down and they forget… so you see, because of the frustration they go through they don’t even want to follow up or chase the man for that GHc 10 he says he can afford,” she asserted.

Buttressing her claim, Mrs. Myles Koufie has thrown a challenge to the DOVVSU to come to her and she will substantiate her claim.

She said “me, in fact, I have stopped working with them a long time ago. I rather rely on legal aids and women lawyers. As for DOVVSU I am discouraged. They can come to me and I have so many reasons why I am saying this.”
