Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has revealed plans by th Ghana Armed Forces to establish a Special Forces Unit to combat terrorism.

Mr Nitiwul said the threat of terrorism was real and that there was the need to re-tool soldiers to safeguard the country.

He also highlighted terrorism incidents the West African sub-region to make his point.

Speaking at the 'Meet the Press' series on Thursday December 7, the Defence Minister said lands will be acquired at Poduase in the Eastern Region, Bawa Barracks and Daboya in the Northern Region and Shai Hills in the Greater Accra Region "to facilitate the establishment of Special Forces Units to counter the emerging threats, in particular terrorism."

According to him, the move is also to ensure the combat readiness of the Armed Forces.

"The dynamics in global threats and the ever-increasing role of non-state actors in conflict situation require our dedicated officers and men to live up to expectation," he said.

"So far, our troops hav demonstrated the resilience, mental stamina and robustness and the preparedness to deal with any of such threats," he added.

He called for the debate over "bread and butter needs" to be raised to another level since the country needs enduring peace and stability to develop.

"We must have peace and security for us to enjoy the fruits of our labour," he stressed.
