Phone repairer arrested for 'hacking' Whatsapp accounts

The suspect, David Sam-Essandoh had reportedly connected the WhatsApp application of his victims through WhatsApp web to a MacBook Pro laptop and had been monitoring their conversations.

A mobile phone repairer is in police grips for allegedly hacking into the social media accounts of people and using the information for other foul activities.

The director in-charge of the Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Dr Gustav Herbert Yankson, told the Daily Guide newspaper that the suspect was arrested on August 15 when one of the victims realized that her Whatsapp conversations were being monitored.

Chief Superintendent Yankson said the victim lodged a complaint with the police. He said that the mobile phone of the victim was examined and it revealed that the WhatsApp application had been connected through WhatsApp web to a MacBook Pro laptop.

This was after she had given her phone to the suspect around July this year for repairs.

Investigations from the police further revealed that the suspect had connected the WhatsApp application of two other ladies on the same computer using different browsers without their knowledge and was monitoring their conversations as well.

When he was questioned, he reportedly gave the same excuse that he wanted to know what both ladies had said about him.

Upon interrogation, the suspect admitted the offence and stated that he only wanted to monitor what the ladies were saying about him.

The suspect is currently being processed for court for prosecution.

Meanwhile, investigations are still ongoing, Chief Superintendent Yankson said.
