Soldiers said to be returning home from Lebanon on peacekeeping duties have been paid only $1,000 instead of $3,000 as their accrued allowances, the Republic newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The development is said to have caused anger and disenchantment among the soldiers returning home on leave from UNIFIL duties in Lebanon who were looking forward to receiving $3,000 promised them as their allowance.

Also, the pro-opposition newspaper is claiming that the disenchantment of the troops was further stoked by the fact that 2.1% increment that the government says it has effected in the salaries of soldiers has not reflected on their pay slip.

The government is reported to have said it was broke to pay the full amount when queries for the slash were raised by the soldiers.
