One arrested over Nsawam quarry explosion

About thirteen people sustained serious injuries after an explosion at an abandoned quarry site in Paebo in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern region.

The Nsawam police have arrested one man who was found trespassing in the restricted quarrying community of Paebo, days after an explosion occurred in the area.

According to the police, the man's action is at variance with the law as the area has been marked as a restricted area following the explosion.

Nsawam Police Commander, Superintendent Magnus Sam has told TV3, “we saw him at a restricted place and immediately he was apprehended. He is in custody as we speak and would be assisting us with investigations.

“As for the owner himself, he has not surfaced yet but we are on the lookout for him and we will surely keep investigating until we get to the bottom of it.”

About thirteen people sustained  serious injuries after an explosion at an abandoned quarry site in Paebo in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern region.

The blast, which occurred Wednesday evening, collapsed several buildings in the community and destroyed lots of property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

It is unclear what caused the explosion.

But reports suggest that some explosives which might have been left behind by the Company which used to operate the site might have been the cause.

Security has however been tightened in the area to prevent any likely explosion.

Meanwhile, the over one thousand people displaced as a result of the explosion have refused to re-settle at make-shift shelters created for them, the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO has said.
