1,000 European Union citizens still unaccounted for

12 EU citizens are known to have died so far, many having been killed by avalanches, triggered by the quake, that struck base camp below Mount Everest.

The European Union (EU) envoy to Nepal, Rensje Teerink officials has said that 1,000 EU citizen still remain unaccounted for 6 day after the earthquake in Nepal.

BBC reports that an EU official said most are thought to have been trekking in the Everest or remote Langtang regions.

Many are hoped to be alive but isolated by the quake.

Reuters has also said that many backpackers do not register with their embassies in Nepal, which has made it harder to trace them.

Meanwhile, 14,000 people are reported to have been injured in the disaster while over 5,500 people have died so far. Relief and rescue teams have reached most areas but many people remain in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Landslides and poor weather have also hampered efforts to deliver aid to isolated districts.
