Police release suspects while they search for more

All those arrested in relation to clashes in Tafo have been released while police investigate further, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Tanko says.

Some residents of the Muslim community at Tafo in Kumasi on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, clashed with some loyalists of the Tafo traditional council over disagreements over a piece of land at the Tafo cemetery. Around 45 people were arrested in connection with the disturbances, however all have now been released on a police inquiry basis.

No one was currently in police custody over the incident, but Tanko said police were still investigating the clashes and if they get evidence on suspects, they will be rearrested and charged.

“The day of the disturbance we managed to get some footage so we are using that footage to identity those involved. Those we arrested unfortunately we didn't get anybody who was in the footage.”

Police were still searching for more people suspected to be involved in the clashes.

“We have declared some people as wanted because we believe they were those who were jumping in on the disturbances. As of now we have not been able to arrest them. We are still on the ground trying to locate them and arrest them to assist in the investigations.”

He said Tafo was now “very calm”.

“People are going about their normal business. We have military and police officers performing their duties to ensure there is no trouble.”

Last week a curfew was imposed on the town, from 6pm until 6am, but it has been reduced to 8pm until 4am, Tanko expected it to be reduced and then lifted, but could not say when this will happen.

“It depends on the situation on the ground,” he said.

The police called on anyone with further information to come forward.
