Auditor-General demands prosecutorial powers from Attorney-General
The Auditor-General wants to be granted the powers to prosecute corrupt public officials.

According to Mr. Domelevo, granting him such powers will allow his office to be able to take on corrupt public officials.
He explained that his request does not seek to undermine the Attorney-General’s office but to help out in bringing persons indicted in the Auditor-General’s report to book.

“If a fiat is given by the Attorney General to Audit Service just like it has been given to the police and others to prosecute…which I have actually applied for, you will see me in action,” he said whiles addressing the media on Monday.
This comes after the Auditor-General’s department recorded many cases of unlawful monetary practices in its 2016 audit.
The findings pointed to many ministries, departments and agencies mismanaging finances, whiles some GHc5.4 billion was wrongfully paid to contractors, and other service providers between 2014 and 2017.
In December 2017, the Auditor-General announced that it has surcharged 62 organisations for receiving payments from the state without any documentation as proof, as per directives from the Supreme Court.

However, many of the organisations have walked free, with the Attorney-General’s surcharge proving to be fruitless.
This, Mr. Domelevo, said is one of the main reasons why he has applied to the Attorney-General for prosecutorial powers.
According to him, such powers would mean the Auditor-General’s department will not only audit but can drag corrupt public officials to court based on their findings.
