Security analyst Irbard Ibrahim has called on law enforcement agencies in the country, to be proactive in clamping down on vigilante groups belonging to political parties as promised by the Inspector General of police John Kudalor.

His comment comes on the back of a bloody clash between supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Ajumako Besease in the Central region over the weekend.

A supporter of the NDC lost an eye while three supporters of the NPP ended up with stab wounds.

Mr Irbard indicated that though the police seem to be on top of their game, they should intensify measures to root out political warmongers, adding that the Besease incident “might have taken a well-planned and well-executed strategy”.

"What became of the disbandment of quasi-military groups in political parties? The incident over the weekend raises concerns yet again about some of these groups,” he told Accra-based Class FM.

“If a few people can coordinate and stoke this level of violence, then it raises issues for concern,” he noted, as political activity towards the 2016 elections in December continues to heighten.

According to the Regional communications officer of the NDC, Kwesi Dawood, a known activist of the NPP, nicknamed 'Rasta', stabbed an NDC officer, Samuel Asare, in the right eye. Another NPP activist also used a harmful weapon to knock him down.

“With blood oozing from his eye, Asare passed out instantly. The family and friends of Samuel Asare identified the perpetrator of the unprovoked attack on their relation as the driver of Mr J. N. Okyere, who is the Managing Director of Comptran Engineering & Planning Associates and Chairman of the NPP's Central Regional Finance Committee,” he recounted.

He accused the NPP of initiating the violence, saying members of the NDC were in a meeting discussing an upcoming keep fit exercise which was slated for October 3 when they were attacked by thugs belonging to the NPP.

But the NPP Central Regional Secretary accused Mr Dawood of peddling falsehood explaining they were attacked “with many having abrasions on their bodies and one person sustaining deep cutlass wounds”.

He indicated that the injured were sent to the Ajumako Government Hospital for treatment and were later discharged.

“Officials of the party later reported the case to the police,” he added.

The Central Regional Chapter of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a statement to condemned the incident.
