The Sunyani Police in the Brong Ahafo Region is seeking a court injunction to prevent aggrieved customers of DKM microfinance company from demonstrating on Saturday, September 17.

It is on that same the governing National Democratic Congress will launch its manifesto also in Sunyani.

The Police argue that they do not have enough personnel if both events happen on the same day.

Public Relations Officer of the Regional Police Command ASP Christopher Tawiah said “we have limited logistics and staff to provide security services for both NDC and demonstrators on the same day. We can only do one at a time. The only way to prevent them (DKM customers) from demonstrating is by seeking a court injunction. We have already started the process.”

But the Coordinator of the Aggrieved DKM customers, Maxwell Mahama has indicated that they will stop at nothing to demonstrate on Saturday.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM he said “the law is clear that we should notify the Police and we have done that according to the law but the Police cannot say they will give us approval that is out of the law, respectfully. Whether they will give us protection or not, we can also give ourselves protection. It is also in the law; we will give self-protection to ourselves.”

DKM Microfinance was one of the rogue microfinance companies who squandered the deposits of their customers. DKM alone reportedly owed about GHC70 million in unpaid deposits.
