A former National Security advisor, Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo Mensah, has described as worrying the extent at which the Bureau of National Investigations, BNI has been used by politicians over the years for their own interests.

According to him, the BNI “has been used by politicians, not today but over the years which is not right.”

“I am not going to excuse anybody but whatever the BNI is today, is what it was under the NPP” he told Accra-based TV3.

His comments come on the back of the arrest of a Ghanaian-Lebanese pilot and author, Fadi Dabbousie by the BNI, which has caused many to accuse it of doing the bidding of government.

Brig. Nunoo Mensah, who is also former Director of the Military Intelligence Unit, believes the BNI’s role should be to protect every Ghanaian.

He further expressed regret that the military has also become political; a situation he argues is affecting its mandate.

Narrating his time when he was being trained as military personnel, he said: “I was banned from visiting military institutions for having lunch with former President Rawlings.

“That was my crime so I was banned from entering Burma Camp, even if I am dying; I couldn’t visit the 37 Military Hospital for medical attention.”

Many Ghanaians have over the years raised issues with the conduct of the BNI, which they describe as unprofessional.

The professionalism of Ghana's intelligence bureau was recently questioned when it issued a statement saying that the two radio panellists: Godwin Ako Gunn and Alistair Tairo Nelson, lacked the capacity to carry out a death threat they had issued against justices of the Supreme Court during a political talk show on Accra-based Montie FM.
