Mugabe is a 'disgrace' - Majority Leader

Robert Mugabe, on Tuesday resigned from his position after ruling the southern African country for 37 years since 1980 but Ghana's Majority Leader said he is a disgrace for overstaying his pregnancy.

Recalling his working visit to Zimbabwe, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said: “I worked in Zimbabwe during 1988/89. Zimbabwe then can be compared to some foreign countries. Zimbabwe was like South Africa to me then. But my visit to the country again in the year 2000, I wept, the place was really bad. Almost everything there was in a bad state. It was sad, even clean drinking water was a problem for the people.”

“Zimbabwe was the bread basket of the southern African region. They supplied most African countries with foodstuffs. But it’s hard for them now to feed themselves. Even common bread, people can’t afford. An insolvent country I will call them in recent time. It’s a disgrace,” he said.

The 93-year-old's resignation came after a week of intense pressure from the military and the public.

Despite an army takeover and expulsion from his own ruling ZANU-PF party, Mugabe had refused to step down in a defiant televised speech on Sunday, November 19, 2017. However, he sent a letter of resignation to the Zimbabwean parliament on Tuesday, November 21.

Commenting on the development, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said although Mugabe achieved some possible things for his country “his decision to die as a president and handover to his wife was his downfall.”

“It’s sad for him and a disgrace not only to the people of Zimbabwe but the whole of African leaders. African leaders must learn a lesson from Mugabe’s downfall” he told Accra-based Neat FM.
