The workers were protesting against what they described as the unfair treatment for many months.

A worker at the Tema port has been hit by a stray bullet during a demonstration by the workers on Thursday.

One of the workers, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “They called in the police and they have arrested some of the workers. The rubber bullet has injured someone’s eye. He has been rushed to the hospital. So what is happening in this country…?”

“How can you pay your workers less than GHC250.00 and expect them to survive and work well? The Chinese workers eat good meals whilst we eat bread…” one other worker told Accra-based Adom FM.

The police had arrived at the scene to ensure that the workers resumed work. But the scene turned chaotic when the workers began pelting the police officers with stones.

The police were, therefore, forced to fire rubber bullets to restore order.

Calm, however, returned when the Deputy Minister of Roads and Transport, Daniel Titus-Glover, intervened.
