A 45-year-old refrigeration mechanic has been arrested by the police for allegedly posing as an official of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to dupe some people in Accra.

The suspect, Henry Sowah, is said to have told his victims that the BNI wanted to auction some cars which he could assist them to buy.

One of the victims (name withheld) reported to the Tesano Police that Sowah absconded after he had expressed interest in the deal and paid Gh¢11,000 to him for a Tundra vehicle.

Suspect goes into hiding

Briefing journalists, the Tesano District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Edward K. Tetteh, said the complainant claimed his girlfriend had introduced Sowah to him.

However, shortly after handing over the money to Sowa, Mr Tetteh said the man went into hiding and stopped answering all calls to his mobile phone.

“The victim attempted to contact him but to no avail and later realised that the suspect had defrauded him after he found out that Sowah was not an official of the BNI. He reported the matter to the Police.”

He said the police launched a manhunt for the suspect and on June 20, 2015, he was arrested while he was travelling to Aburi, believed to be his hideout.
Confession

At the Tesano Police Station, Mr Tetteh said Sowah confessed during interrogation that he was not a BNI official.

Rather, Sowah claimed that he had a friend who worked at the BNI who told him his organisation was auctioning some cars.

He also told the police that he gave Gh¢10,300 of the amount to the friend whom he named only as Dodzie while he kept Gh¢700.

Mr Tetteh said while Sowah was in custody, another victim (name withheld), who identified himself as a pastor, identified the suspect as the man who allegedly duped him through the same modus operandi.
