NDC lost 2016 election for abandoning ideals of June 4 revolution - Rawlings

In a speech on Sunday at Wa to mark the 38th anniversary of the "June 4 Revolution," the former president took aim at former president John Mahama, suggesting that he should step aside for a new leader to take over the affairs of the party.

The June 4 ideals, he has often said, are probity and accountability and social justice.

In a speech on Sunday at Wa to mark the 38th anniversary of the "June 4 Revolution," the former president took aim at former President John Mahama, suggesting that he should step aside for a new leader to take over the affairs of the party.

Mr Mahama had said he lost the election because the NDC was a "lame horse."

Using the same "lame horse" analogy, Mr Rawlings boomed: "Not too long ago, I thought we heard the jockeys training the horses were responsible for this disgraceful failure, while one of the horses was bold enough to lay the failure at the step of the jockey.

"For me, we lost our masses because we betrayed the values of the June 4th. However, if this horse jockey business cannot be resolved comprehensively allowing integrity to prevail, then let both of them step aside and allow for fresh leaders with solid integrity to provide the needed leadership."

He accused the party he foundered of amassing so much wealth so as to use it as a political weapon to "perpetuate and be kingmakers."

"How we can grab so much money and now use it as political weapon to perpetuate and be kingmakers. If I was doing it this way, if any of my colleagues and I were doing it this way, would any of them be where they are today? No. we believe in justice and fairness, true democracy," he said.

Earlier, he had told the Wa Na at his palace that the June 4 uprising is Ghana's second independence. According to him, the revolution liberated the nation from oppressive tendencies.

We all know how important June 4 is to us. It is pretty much like a second independence to liberate ourselves from ignorance of the past and from some of those oppressive tendencies," he said.
