Politicians warned to stop "spewing" hate speech

The minister of the Interior, Prosper Douglas Bani, has warned Ghanaians - including politicians - to stop preaching hate speech.

 

At a press conference in Ho in the Volta region on 21st November, 2016, he stressed that "hate speeches must stop now, it leads to citizens hating on each other. You must stop now otherwise the laws of this country will catch up with you."

Hate speeches are very difficult to withdraw and thus those who "spew" it should be very careful - especially politicians, he added.

Mr. Bani emphasized that the security heads will not tolerate any threats that will disturb the peace Ghana is enjoying because of some people.

In recent times there have been incidence of hate speeches involving some politicians like the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, and the Northern regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bugri Naabu.

The minister reiterated that the government is doing everything possible for the 2016 elections to come to pass peacefully with "little incidence or none."

He further stressed that "this election is not the beginning of a war. We have done it six times and we will do it again come 7th December."

Groups and rogues disturbing the peace will be dealt with accordingly, he noted emphasizing on the need for citizens to respect  leaders, each other and the laws. "We can forge forward if we have respect for our institutions."

Mr. Bani commended the regional early elections task force for its diligence, "I can say the region task force are prepared for the elections."

He said in view of governments commitment to free and fair elections, it put together a security task force in January this year to adequately prepare for the elections.
