The Black Stars again flattered to deceive after failing to get past the semi-final stage of the tournament, having lost 1-0 to Cameroon.
Ghana subsequently lost again in the 3rd/4th place match to Burkina Faso thanks to a ferocious last-minute free-kick from Alian Traore.
The result means that the nation’s trophy drought will be extended to, at least, 37 years, and Laryea Kingston has attributed the team’s poor performances in the tournament to a disastrous player selection policy.
Speaking as a pundit on GhOne TV, the former Hearts of Oak winger said: ''the coach refused to give opportunities to most of the players he took there (to the AFCON). And I think if you don’t have confidence in them, there is no reason why you should take them there.
''For me I don’t think this selection [policy] to the national team is based on merit, and it really affected the team.
''In our game against Egypt I expected him to make chances so that as we progressed in the competition you will know the kind of player to replace the other at any point in time, but it wasn’t the case.''
Ghana will begin preparations for the next Africa Cup of Nations in June when the qualifiers for Cameroon 2019 kickstart.
