The 22-year-old has been excused preseason duties with the first team by Simeone, who is expected to loan out the Ghanaian youngster as he seeks to get adequate playing time.
Before a loan deal is secured for him, Mensah together with Nicolás Schiapacasse and Caio Henrique will be having their pre-season with manager Oscar Fernandez at the second team.
It could be recalled that during last year’s pre season, Mensah could not complete his first training session with the club, ending the session by vomiting on the pitch.
He was then sent on loan to Vitoria Guimaraes where he made 25 appearances and gave one assist – though most of them were coming off the bench.
Mensah two years ago was one of the highly rated Ghanaian players in Europe and his form helped him secure a move to Atletico Madrid.
