Gambia players almost assaulted referee in 0-1 defeat to Ghana

The Gambian players were not pleased with the centre referee’s decision to award a penalty in Ghana’s in the late minute of their 0-1 loss in the WAFU Cup.

In the game Ghana dominated play, yet they struggled to get the ball past the iron clad defence of the Gambia.

However, in the second half, they managed to create some goal scoring opportunities, but the likes of Thomas Abbey, Kwame Kizito and Stephen Sarfo wasted them.

The Black Stars who wanted to avoid the drama involved in penalty shootout pushed harder for the match winner and in one of the moves to put pressure on the Gambia, a ball was seemingly blocked by the hand of the latter’s defender and the referee wasted no time to award a penalty in favour of the hosts nation.

The Gambian players who were not pleased with the decision rushed to the referee and some even turned him around.

When sanity later prevailed, Vincent Atingah stepped forward to score the only goal of the game eight minutes into injury time.
