Truly great Ghanaian strikers who never scored many goals

This lot were not great goalscorers but they were scorers of great goals and they derived joy from helping their strike partners rack up the goals.

It’s one of the greatest quirks in football; forwards who don’t score that many goals but are bloody brilliant anyway.

This short list is designed to appreciate that rare Ghanaian players, the selfless centre-forward.

Emmanuel Osei Kuffour

The striker oozed class from every pore and the likes of Ishmael Addo, Prince Tagoe and Eric Bekoe endlessly grateful for his first-class link-up play.

76 Ghana Premier League goals is certainly not to be sniffed at but he did play in more that 200 games for Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko and Ebusua Dwarfs, all as a genuine forward.

Kuffour's record of 2 goals in 31 games for the Black Stars is further evidence that his main attributes lie away from poaching goals.

Augustine Arhinful

Okay, so he’s not a ‘truly great’ Ghanaian forward but he’s held in very high regard for a forward who scored about 80 league goals across his whole career.

Forty two of those came during his time with Ankaragücü.

He operated a lot deeper than most forwards but his name still appeared as a striker on the teamsheet game after game.

We’re talking about a forward who played at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2000 African Cup of Nations.

His tally for Black Stars? Zero goal in 19 caps.

Matthew Amoah

One of the most mercurial and enigmatic talents to ever grace the senior national team.

106 goals in 322 league games for the humble Ghanaian is not a bad return but he’s another whose quality on the ball and penchant for the spectacular led to hero worship beyond his figures.

Ex-Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic was an admirer and he knows a thing or two about what makes a good footballer.

Peter Ofori Quaye

The Ghanaian reached double figures just once in his 12-year football career.

To be fair, he was used primarily as a substitute during his Olympiacos days and he's known as the youngest goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League, a feat he achieved during the 1997-98 season when he scored for Olympiacos when he was 17 years and 195 days old.

In the early 2000s, Ofori-Quaye attracted much attention from other clubs, scoring key goals including those in the UEFA Champions League against the likes of Rosenborg BK, Olympique Lyonnais, and Deportivo La Coruna.

Ofori-Quaye scored 24 league goals during his time on these shores but that tally doesn’t reflect his composure in the box.

Abedi Pele

One of the greatest forwards to ever play for the Black Stars.

The non-flying Ghanaian was a goal machine for the Black Stars, scoring 33 goals in  73 caps for the senior national team.

But for clubs, his record is surprisingly modest — 157 league goals in 479 games.

Abedi scored just 23 goals in his 112 league games for the Marseille during the time he was in top form.
