Kwesi Appiah can win the AFCON for Ghana – Kwesi Nyantakyi
The GFA president believes with the needed support, Kwesi Appiah will be successful as Ghana coach.
President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has backed Kwesi Appiah to succeed as Black Stars coach if given the needed support from all stakeholders.
The FIFA Council member insists the FA will do its bit to ensure that the road is clear for the Al Khartoum boss to excel.
Appiah has been handed a second coming as Black Stars coach, after leaving the post in 2014.
The 52-year-old was in charge between 2012 and 2014 but was shown the exit after poor performance by the team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
However, on Tuesday the GFA announced that Appiah had been appointed to replace Avram Grant as Ghana coach.
And the FA president sees no reason why the former Ghana U-23 coach will cannot win trophies with the team.
According to him, winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 is very possible.
“We want the Black Stars to win trophies, so ultimately we the Executive Committee and whoever will be given the mantle – as with Kwesi Appiah – is to ensure that we win trophies. That is; the Africa Cup, the World Cup and so on,” Nyantakyi said after Appiah was confirmed as the new Ghana coach.
“[Qualifying for the World Cup] is not an impossibility. When we sit down we will discuss the bench mark that we want him [Kwesi Appiah] to achieve. And one of them is not qualify us to the2018 [2019] Africa Cup of Nations.
“It is not far from being achieved. It is there are any impediments or challenges, we will discuss them and see how we can surmount them.”
Appiah has been handed a two-year contract and his first task will be to qualify Ghana for the next Africa Cup of Nations, as well as get the nations World Cup qualifying bid back on track.
