Stakeholders in the fishing industry have been concerned in the past days after the Minister of Fisheries and Aqua Culture Development, Sherrie Ayittey revealed that the country loses 10 million dollars to illegal fishing, specifically trans-shipment fishing annually.

This has prompted fears that the European Commission may place a ban on the country again.

According to the Director in-Charge of the Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Division, Godfrey Baidoo, there is the need for government to strictly enforce the fisheries laws.

“It is important for us to enforce the country’s fisheries laws. It is important that we do this, otherwise we may be blacklisted again.”

Mr. Godfrey Baidoo, however conceded that his outfit needs logistical support to properly enforce the laws.

“We need a lot of support because it is expensive to police the waters and arrest perpetrators of illegal fishing in the country.”
