World athletics governing body, the IAAF, has confirmed Ghanaian national javelin record holder, John Ampomah’s qualification to the Rio 2016 Olympics after achieving the Olympic qualifying standard with a new national record 83.09m at the Soga-Nana Memorial meet at the Cape Coast stadium last Friday.

The former Middle Tennessee State University student is currently ranked 29 by the IAAF and is set to make his debut at the Olympic Games which begins on 5 August in Rio.
He had been chasing the Olympic qualifying mark all season but could only throw 75.22m to win silver at the 20 Africa Senior Championships in Durban, South Africa recently.
