Kenya postpones elections in parts of the country after violent clashes leave people dead

Voting in four counties in Kenya has been delayed after protesters clashed with the police forcing authorities to postpone the exercise in areas affected by the violence.

At least three people were killed as police reported clashes in five of Kenya's 47 counties.

The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said elections in western Kenya, and specifically in Homa Bay, Kisumu, Migori, and Siaya counties would be postponed to Saturday, Oct. 28.

In the Kibera slum in Nairobi, protesters set the street on fire blocked polling station in order to halt the vote.

The repeat presidential election began on Thursday morning amid fear and uncertainty that has polarized the country for months.

Kenya’s high court annulled the presidential race in August won by incumbent president Uhuru Kenyatta, citing “illegalities and irregularities.”

Opposition leader Raila Odinga withdrew from the repeat election in early October, accusing the electoral commission of stonewalling reforms needed to hold a fair election.

Local media say turnout has been low compared with August’s election and this has been blamed on Odinga calling on his supporters to boycott the election.
