This was contained in a statement issued by the GCAA. It stated that the ban took effect from yesterday (Monday, September 26, 2016).

The ban does not apply to flight passengers only but also the crew of any flight that lands and takes off in Ghana. Passengers who are also from other countries to Ghana cannot turn on or charge their devices.

There has been a global recall of the phone, after reports that they spontaneously exploded. After investigating the issue, Samsung found that the rechargeable batteries inside the phones were at fault.

“Following these recent events, the GCAA directs that all passengers and crew in possession of these devices should not turn on or charge them on board aircraft. Passengers and crew are also hereby prohibited from stowing these devices in any checked baggage, even when turned off.”

The statement added that in order to ensure this is adhered to, passengers will be briefed on it.

“The directive shall form part of the safety briefing to passengers on board all airlines operating in Ghana and operating into and out of Ghana until otherwise directed by the Authority”

Other Aviation regulators across the globe have also issued a ban against the use of Samsung Note 7 on aircraft from their various countries.

Some of them include the US Federal Aviation Administration and airlines such as Qantas Airways and Virgin Australia.

The leading phone manufacturer on September 2 announced that it had recalled over 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 devices due to several reported cases of overheating or outright explosions during charging.
