A former Birmingham City Council housing officer, Clive Glasford, has been sentenced to five years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a vulnerable single mother who was afraid of losing her home.

The 47-year-old Glasford carried out the vile attack while the mother's child was sleeping next to her.

The Birmingham Crown Court heard that Glasford had pursued a relationship with the victim who rejected his advances before raping her.

The court heard that Glasford, listed as an Area Champion for Elite Boxers online, had visited the woman on the evening of December 12, 2013, when there was sexual contact between them.

However the victim then went upstairs complaining of feeling unwell and passed out. She then woke up to discover the defendant having sex with her.

Recorder Hill QC told the former Birmingham City Council worker:

"It seems to me from the evidence I have heard you were strongly attracted to her.

Although there was an age gap of over 20 years you were keen and pursued a relationship with her.

Clearly she was vulnerable up to a point, because as a single mother she was fearful of losing her house.

You were clearly not only breaching your code of conduct as a housing officer, as the jury found, you went much further than that.

She was unconscious which meant she was in no position to consent. When she woke up she tried to stop you doing what you were doing.

The position is aggravated because she had her child in bed with her at the time although mercifully he did not wake up."
