A woman by the name of Bernarda Gallardo in Chile has taken it upon herself to adopt dead bodies dumped by their mothers and give them a proper burial.
Her golden mission started on the 4th of April, 2003 when she read the story of an abandoned dead baby girl in a pile of rubbish in the local paper. She had a strong urge to do something about it- give the baby a proper burial.
Unfortunately, the process of adopting the baby was delayed with bureaucratic bottle necks. Naming the dead baby Aurora she was determined to overcome these obstacles. After many months of dealing with a skeptical judge, the body of Aurora was released to Bernarda.
At her funeral 500 people attended. Apparently Bernarda's struggle to get Aurora was covered by the press. According to Bernarda the ceremony did not feel like a funeral but like a party celebrating the short life of the baby.
The very next day, the corpse of a baby boy was dumped. This annoyed Bernarda. She felt her work was in vain. The anger she felt led her to start a campaign discouraging people from dumping their babies.
Till date she has gone on to adopt three more babies, Manuel, Victor and Cristobal. Her golden act has inspired a Chilean film director to shoot a movie based around her heroic acts. The title of the movie is ''.
In 1976 when she was 16 Bernarda Gallardo was raped. The incident led to a pregnancy which she kept. She gave birth to a daughter who she brought up with love.
Gallardo was raped by a man in her neighbourhood in 1976 when she was 16. She is now in the process of adopting another dead baby girl.
