IAAF president Sebastian Coe hopes to take the Diamond League "to the next level" after being appointed chairman of the competition's board.

Coe assumed the top job in world athletics on August 19 " replacing Lamine Diack " and has had a baptism of fire amid the scandal over alleged state-sponsored doping by Russian athletes, suspensions of Kenyan officials and claims of corruption within the IAAF.

The former Olympic champion has also had to step away from his own role as a brand ambassador for Nike, while defending his involvement in Eugene's successful 2021 World Championships bid.

"The IAAF Diamond League annually provides athletics with a prominent global shop window," he said.

"The 14 meeting series which runs from May to September offers fans the best international athletics competition outside the IAAF World Championships and the Olympic Games.

"I am really looking forward to reviewing this top product with the meeting organisers who are our close partners in this series.

"Together we intend to take this popular invitational tour to the next level of sporting excellence and entertainment."

The 2016 Diamond League season is due to begin Doha on May 6.
