Just ahead of its first season launchwhich by now you've probably binged, caused confusion over timelines, incepted the catchiest song in the history of TV music in your head, and forced you to look at yourself naked in the mirror and realize that you are in fact not Henry CavillNetflix's The Witcher was picked up for a second season. So toss a coin to that special person in your life who actually pays for Netflix. Monster killing awaits.

The series, based on the books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski , was rumored to cost about $10 million per episode, putting it about even with Game of Thrones' final season a similar show the series has been trying to emulate.

While The Witcher's first season certainly wasn't the smooth, methodical entry into the series like the Game of Thrones first (and arguably best) season proved to be, it did manage to show promise for bigger and more exciting battles to come. Here's hoping The Witcher sticks to its serio-comic tonebard songs, side quests, and audience-winksand doesn't go full no-fun Jon Snow for season 2.

Here's what we know so far.

In January, Cavill shared a post on his Instagram. Short of breath, he had just completed a 13K run around his home island of Jersey (no, the other Jersey). The run was both for his Witcher training (because: bathtub scenes) as well as a primer for one of his charities, the Durell Wildlife Conservation Trust, which will a 13K Jersey challenge on May 17.

Apparently Cavill doesnt need much time to train, because since then, The Witcherseason 2 is officially off to the filming races.

That means the season is on track for a release date in 2021 . (Still better than the two-year gap between season's 7 and 8 for Game of Thrones.) Like season 1, there will be eight episodes planned, featuring Cavill and some new witchers.

In season 1, Geralt inferred that he was one of the last of his kind. He even found the body of another Witcher, suggesting that they are in fact mortal. All that said, season 2 will give us three (!) more witchers: Coen (played by Yasen Atour), Lambert (played by Paul Bullion of Peaky Blinders), and Eskel (played by Thue Ersten Rasmussen of Fast and Furious 9).

Also joining the cast are Agnes Bjorn and Aisha Fabienne Ross.

And a name you might not recognizeKristofer Hivjubut a face you certainly will. He played Tormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones.

While theres no word yet on season 3, signs are promising. The first season covered only the first novel of The Witcher series , composed of six full-length books and two short story collections. And Netflix just greenlit an animated spin-off movie . Yeah, theyre definitely all in on this one.
