The five students, Prosper Obed Bacha, Deborah Aquandah, Philippa Amponsah, Richla Obeng and Albert Sagoe have been awarded cash prizes. The students, studying Chinese as a liberal subject, excelled in the Chinese language examination and were awarded with $500 each by the Chinese embassy.
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana,, after presenting the prizes, said the support was another effort to further strengthen the relationship between China and Ghana. Also Ghana topped the list of countries with students self-financing their education in China now, while many more were studying on Chinese Government scholarship she added. She pledged China's support to government's efforts to convert the country’s polytechnics into technical universities.
She stated that Chinese had become an important language and over 150 million people around the world were now learning Chinese. The Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the UCC, Professor Dora Adu Buandoh, called on the Chinese Embassy to support the faculty to enhance the teaching of the subject, because a number of students were becoming more interested in studying Chinese, she explained.
Also she called for support for lecturers teaching the language, adding effective teaching of the language, the faculty would need at least two lecturers at any given time.In conclusion, The Pro-Vice Chancellor of UCC, Professor John Nelson Buah, she study of the Chinese language was becoming attractive to more people and appealed for scholarship for lecturers to enable them to study the language.
