Discretionary relief for poor Jamaicans
Jamaicans who find it difficult to pay their property tax, might be able to get relief from regulatory authorities.
An official of the tax regulatory body said the Government has come up with a viable way of helping tax defaulter.
Commenting on the tax relief, the Manager of revenue enhancement and resource mobilization at the Ministry of Local Government and community development, Calvert Thomas said “… So if persons are in that position they are invited to submit their applications either to the local authority or to the tax office within their respective parishes.”
As part of this new effort, government agencies that do not generate income, schools, charitable organisations and churches, will be exempted from paying property taxes.
In Jamaica, citizens are expected to pay their property tax on the 1st of April every year.
