Country to support Yemen with troops

Senegal has offered to support Yemen in their struggle by sending 2,100 troops to support the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthi rebels.

According to BBC, Senegalese foreign minister, Mankeur Ndiaye said Senegal was responding to a Saudi request to help secure the kingdom's border with Yemen.

Ndiaye told Senegal's parliament that the coalition was "aiming to protect and secure the holy sites of Islam, Medina and Mecca"

Senegal is a majority Sunni Muslim country that has received aid from Saudi Arabia. Regardless, the announcement of joining the Yemeni crisis has been met with swift criticism in Senegal with  opposition politician Modou Diagne saying "there is nothing to justify a military intervention by Senegal".

A Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out air strikes against Yemen's Houthi rebels, who seized the capital, Sanaa. The crisis has since claimed over 1,200 lives while 300,000 have fled their homes in the past 6 weeks.

Countries participating in Yemen's military campaign include Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Senegal while the US, the UK and France are providing logistical support.
