The country’s football governing body has rejected claims that government imposed Kwesi Appiah on them.

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Sannie Daara, has quashed rumours that government had a hand in Kwesi Appiah’s second coming as Black Stars coach.

According to him, the Al Khartoum boss came out tops among the lot when facing the GFA’s search committee.

The FA announced on Tuesday, April 4, that Appiah had been appointed as Ghana coach to replace Avram Grant who resigned from the post in February.

However, reports from certain quarters have suggested that government had a hand in Appiah’s selection as Ghana coach, especially after the Minister for Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah openly backed the 52-year-old for the job.

The FA, though, has rejected claims of government interference, insisting the decision to go with Kwesi Appiah was solely based on competency.

“Absolutely there was no government interference,” GFA spokesperson of the Ghana FA, Saanie Daara refuted in an interview with Starr FM.

“We (GFA) made this appointment based on competency and nothing else. Any decision starts and ends with us. So therefore when we win we are praised. However, when we lose, we will take the blame.”

Kwesi Appiah’s appointment marks the second time he will be handling the Black Stars, having coached the team between 2012 and 2014.

The 52-year-old qualified Ghana for the 2014 World Cup, and was also the man in charge when the U-23 team won Gold at the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.
