The forward who was signed this summer from PSVasked for the iconic jersey which has been worn by Manchester United legends like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Louis van Gaal was said to be impressed with Depay's request for the No 7 shirt seeing it as an indication that he is willing to follow in the footstep of the legends who had worn that jersey in the past.
The club today released the numbers of all players in the squad and Depay's wish has been granted.
Depay will hope not to follow in the footstep of the last three players who donned that shirt for the Old Trafford outfit.
Michael Owen wore the shirt during his injury hit stay at the club before Antonio Valencia-who move to No 25- and Di Maria who had a below par first and only season at Manchester United after his £60million record transfer from Real Madrid last August.
Luke Shaw will be switching from No 3 to No 23, Marouane Fellaini will now be wearing No 27.
New keeper Sergio Romero has been given No 20 shirt left by Robin van Persie.
Summer signing Bastian Schweinsteiger has taken No 31, Morgan Schneiderlin will wear No 28 and Matteo Darmian has taken No 36.
