Australia coach Michael Cheika has made seven changes to the Wallabies' starting line-up to face Argentina as he looks ahead to the Rugby World Cup.

Despite having seen Australia defeat South Africa 24-20 last week in their Rugby Championship opener, Cheika is keen to take a look at other members of his squad on their trip to Argentina.

Nick Phipps, Matt Toomua and Joe Tomane have been chosen to replace injured trio Will Genia (knee), Matt Giteau (chest) and Rob Horne (calf), while Greg Holmes, Ben McCalman, David Pocock and Bernard Foley have all been promoted, the Australian Rugby Union announced on Thursday.

The changes mean Cheika has selected a completely different halves pairing with Foley to start at fly-half ahead of Quade Cooper, while Phipps will play at scrum-half in Saturday's match.

"We have two fine playmakers in Quade and Bernard. Both players can make an enormous impact on our team," Cheika said in a statement.

Holmes replaces Sekope Kepu at tighthead prop, Pocock steps into openside flanker for Michael Hooper and McCalman earns the number eight berth instead of Scott Higginbotham.

With Genia, Giteau and Horne unavailable, Cheika has called up Kurtley Beale, Dean Mumm and Nic White onto the bench.

If he comes off the bench, Beale will make his 50th appearance for his country in Mendoza.

"We know Argentina will provide a physical challenge in this match, and our reserves will have a significant role to play," Cheika said.

"Last week they [the bench] got us home against the Springboks, and I will be looking forward to an even a greater impact from our players entering game this weekend."
