The former world number seven, who walked away from the sport in 2012 after being diagnosed with arrhythmia, will play in Cincinnati in August before retiring at the US Open.

Tuesday's match was just Fish's second on the ATP World Tour this year, following his loss to Ryan Harrison at Indian Wells in March.

The American was broken three times by Sela, losing in one hour, 49 minutes.

Fifth seed Baghdatis was untroubled on his way to victory, crushing American Austin Krajicek 6-4 6-0.

It was a good day for the seeds as Steve Johnson and Benjamin Becker also progressed.

The sixth-seeded Johnson beat Slovak Lukas Lacko 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 6-2, while eighth seed Becker was leading Michael Berrer 7-5 when his fellow German retired injured.

Harrison served 12 aces but went down to Denis Kudla 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-5) in an all-American affair.

Big-serving Australian Sam Groth overcame 17-year-old American wildcard Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 and Jared Donaldson beat Somdev Devvarman 6-1 3-6 6-4.
