Achimota SHS students not safe over encroachment – Assistant Headmaster

The students live in fear due to the activities of the squatters, who have taken over sections of the school’s land.

The authorities said the safety and security of the school ought not and could not be the responsibility for only the old students.

The authorities bemoaned the encroachment on school lands saying it posed grave consequences to students and called for decisive steps to be employed in halting such practices.

Parts of the school’s land have been taken over by land guards and developers who are putting up structures without a permit, threatening the very existence of the school.

The school’s lands were acquired by ordinance by the colonial government from the Osu stool in 1921 and an amount of 4,000 pounds paid to the elders of the stool.

However, the assistant headteacher of the school, Ken Amankwah said the students are not safe due to the encroachment.

Addressing the media, Mr Amankwah said "The students are not safe. At the moment, the western part is being encroached seriously. Somebody is walling the place and taking some of the buildings. We reported to the Board about those issues and the students’ safety is very bad now."

"About two weeks ago, after dining, somebody knocked a student [down] with their car. We had to go to the police station, take the student to the hospital and called the parents to come in. At the moment it’s very serious," he added.
