Emotional Szandra Szogedi rues missed Olympic dream

Szandra Szogedi is upset because of the way she lost in the Women's 63kg Judo.

The Judoka lost in the Women’s 63kg Judo against Brazilian Mariana Silva. Szogedi’s loss was in a split second and she knows that can hurt in the sport of Judo.

Having admitted to crying at the end of a lost opportunity to win a medal for Ghana, Szandra Szogedi:

“We had our game plan. It was working and Judo is like that. A split second is enough to lose.

“Olympic and world champions have fell out in the first round previously in the last couple of days.

“That’s what Judo is about. A split second is enough for you to either fall, get your arm ripped off or get choked like I did.

“This is Judo. I know it’s not easy to explain but this is Judo.

“It’s a combat sport. It’s not enough to be strong. I strong today. I was in top form and that’s why I’m gutted. There was more in me than what I did on the mat. That’s the reason I’m upset. No other reason. It’s not the loss. It’s the way I lost.”

Talking about her training and qualification for the Olympic Games in Brazil, Szandra Szogedi said she went to Rio to win a medal.

“I came here to win a medal. I didn’t come here just to be a number or whatever.”

Szandra Szogedi admitted she cried because of emotions. She said one mistake could cause you in the sport of Judo.

The emotional Ghanaian Olympic athlete said:

“God knows only if I’m going to be at the Olympics again. That was my one off opportunity there.”

Ghana presented 16 athletes for the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil. Two of the athletes, Kaya Forson and Szandra Szogedi have been eliminated from their respective sports.
