Kerry Washington's pregnancy isn't reason for season 6 delay

While every other #TGIT show makes its return in September, the sixth season of "Scandal" will premiere in January.

On Tuesday, May 17, 2016, ABC announced that the show will premiere season six in 2017, with new series "Notorious" taking its previous Thursday slot.

According to reports, the delay was as a result of the news that 39-year-old Kerry Washington who plays Olivia on show is expecting her second child with husband Nnamdi Asomugha.

Speaking with Associated Press, Washington who is expecting her second child, stated that her pregnancy had nothing to do with the delay.

According to her, Rhimes found out about her pregnancy a couple weeks after her announcement about the new “Scandal” schedule.

With "Greys Anatomy" and "How to Get Away with Murder" returning this 2016 and retaining their Thursday schedules, the "Scandal" change will mark the first time a Shonda Rhimes' series will share the three-hour slot with a non Shondland series.

In the just-concluded fifth season of the show, Olivia made her relationship with Fitz public, aborted his baby, broke up with him, hooked up with Jake, convinced Jake to get married, and saved his life by appointing him Mellie's running mate.

In season five finale, Cyrus Beene was announced as Frankie Vargas' vice presidential running mate, while Jake Ballard was selected as Mellie's running mate, a decision made by Olivia to save his life.
