Nigeria’s village called “Area of idiots” changes the name to avoid mockery

Recently, names such as 'Shua ye Morbor', 'Kote ye Aboa', 'ɛtwɛ Nim Nyansa' and others went viral after they featured in a parliamentary discussion.

Nigeria also has some of such weird names and one of them has been changed recently to avoid stereotype.

The village which used to be known as “Area of Idiots” has been changed to “Area of Plenty” following agitation by some indigenes.

According to a report by the BBC, the local emir announced the Hausa-language name change after residents complained that they had been mocked for years and were ashamed to tell people where they came from.

“It was shameful telling people outside I come from Unguwar Wawaye [Area of Idiots] but now I can proudly say I come from Yalwar Kadana [Area of Plenty],” resident Bala Sani is quoted as saying.

“We thank the Emir for this gesture.”

It is further reported that the village, in Kano state of Nigeria, derived its original name about 70 years ago when people settled close to a river known as Idiotic River.

It remains a mystery where the river got that insulting name from and it has become almost an indelible stereotype settler around the area have endured for the past seven decades.
