Painter's dung painting of Virgin Mary is estimated to bring in $2.3 M at auction

It's one of the most controversial artworks, and the 1990 painting is set to be auctioned for something close to $2.3 million.

A 1996 painting by British artist Chris Ofili, which features The Holy Virgin Mary, generated lots of controversies during its first exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 1999.

The painting's current owner, David Walsh, is set to sell the paint, which is expected to fetch huge money.

The painting which portrays a black Madonna figure exposing one breast, made from elephant dung has been estimated to sell for $2.3 million at a June 30 auction scheduled to hold at Christie's in London.

Amongst the numerous catholics who opposed the paintings include Rudolph Giuliani, who was the then mayor of New York.
