For the second week running Stan Wawrinka survived a scare against Sergiy Stakhovsky as the second seed reached round two of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Wawrinka saved two match points to beat the Ukrainian in Marseille last week and was two points from defeat in Tuesday's deciding set when at 0-30 on his own serve trailing 5-4.

But the Swiss, knocked out in round one on his previous two outings at the tournament, reeled off four straight points for a crucial hold and immediately broke in game 11 before wrapping up a 5-7 6-3 7-5 victory by serving to love.

Nick Kyrgios continued his impressive form by coming from behind to knock out seventh seed Martin Klizan 3-6 6-3 6-2.

The Australian won his first ATP title at the Open 13 in Marseille last weekend and next meets Mikhail Kukushkin, who defeated Denis Istomin 7-5 7-6 (7-3).

Third seed Tomas Berdych, a two-time runner-up in Dubai, was in fine form as he steamrollered Joao Sousa 6-1 6-4.

Roberto Bautista-Agut and Philipp Kohlschreiber, the fourth and eighth seeds, negotiated their way into round two, the former a 6-2 6-4 winner over Simone Bolelli, while the later saw off Marsel Ilhan 6-1 7-5.

Qualifiers Franko Skugor and Thomas Fabbiano upset the odds by beating Teymuraz Gabashvili and Leonardo Mayer in straight sets.

Skugor now meets Wawrinka and Fabbiano is rewarded with a second-round tie against Berdych.
