Trade volumes between Ghana and Turkey is expected to exceed $1 billion by the year 2020, the Ambassador of Turkey to Ghana, Ms Nesrin Bayazit, has predicted.

At a news conference to launch the first Turkish products fair in Accra on Wednesday, Ms Bayazit said statistics gathered within the first six months of this year indicated that trade volume was already at $300 million. Last year, the volumes recorded amounted to $400 million.

“These figures are enough evidence that the target of $1 billion will be surpassed by that time”, she contended.

The Fair

The products will include food, cosmetics, electronics, construction items, kitchen devices, textiles and home appliances.

A specialist in fairs and exhibitions at the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICOC), Mr Cagri Oluc, said the exhibition was to open up more investment opportunities in Ghana and Turkey.

He said the fair would also serve as a platform for investors and entrepreneurs to meet and discuss investment opportunities in the two countries.

“The ICOC’s aim is not to boost Turkish exports to Ghana, but to also boost Ghanaian exports to Turkey, by a win-win philosophy”, he added.

Mr Oluc bemoaned the lack of what he described as the lack of adequate exhibition centres in Ghana, saying a similar problem was encountered in Nigeria during the last fair held in that country.

He, therefore, urged the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) to construct larger exhibition centres in the country to attract more investors to Ghana.

Ghana’s Participation

The Head of Marketing, Trade and Investment Promotion of the GCCI, Mr Frederick Amoako, said the chamber had signed an MoU with the Ankara Chamber of Commerce in Turkey, for the establishment of an industrial zone in Ghana.

He also said the chamber had presented a delegation of business operators as part of trade missions to Turkey.

That, he said, would strengthen collaboration and cooperation between business operators in Ghana and Turkey.

He expressed the hope that the fair would give birth to many business deals because small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large corporations were expected to participate in the exhibition.
