A 40-year national development plan which seeks to secure Ghana's premier long-term development has been launched. The plan will span 2018 to 2057, when Ghana will mark its centenary independence anniversary.

Speaking at the launch of the  event at the Accra International Conference Center, President John Mahama said "the plan must capture the aspiration of the people and what we need to do to achieve this aspirations".

President John Mahama, has however, stressed the need for a national development plan that would outlive various political regimes.

He said, "The strategic direction for national development is to leverage our natural resource endowments, agriculture potential and relatively large human resource base to accelerate socio-economic transformation through value addition and industrial production starting with light manufacturing and diversification".

Executive Director of the Commission, Dr Nii Moi Thompson said the decision to develop a long-term plan for the country was borne out of the Petroleum Revenue Management Act (PRMA), which demands that the annual revenue shall be allocated based on "a medium-term expenditure framework aligned with a long-term national development plan approved by Parliament".

Ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) as well as metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs), according to Dr Thompson, will have 2017 to prepare for the take-off.

Dr. Thompson stated that the long-term national development plan, which is expected to span 40 years (2018-2057), “will be flexible enough for any government to draw up its own medium-termplans towards achieving the vision and goals of the plan, which are based on the Constitution, in particular the Directive Principles of State Policy.”

Parliament is expected to approve the long-term plan as per law and will conduct four 10-year reviews after its implementation.

A long-term plan is expected to, inter alia, reduce party politicization of the country’s development process and ensure that national development is not centered on sectional political party manifestos.
