A Cuban doctor, who was treating Ebola in Sierra Leone, has contracted the disease, health officials have said.
Felix Baez has been flown to Geneva, Switzerland for treatment after arriving in the disease-ravaged West African country in October.
The infected doctor is one of 256 Cuban health workers who volunteered their services to help in the fight against Ebola.
A statement released by the Sierra Leonean Health Ministry reads:
“Our collaborator is being tended to by a team of British professionals with experience in treating patients who have displayed the disease and they have maintained constant communication with our brigade.”
Baez tested positive to the disease on Monday, November 17, after coming down with a fever on Sunday.
Ebola has killed 5,177 people this year and cases in Sierra Leone are said to be on the increase due to a shortage of treatment centers.
